Curriculum
Our curriculum helps members become the best citizens they can be, encourages them to understand and explore the community around them, and builds skills they need to be life-long learners. The foundation of our work, the curriculum is research-based and was developed with the input of over 40 professors, clinicians, and educators and implemented over a decade of personalized instruction. It is delivered in a group format, with each member’s neurodevelopmental profile guiding how they are supported. We embrace a growth mindset, members’ aspirations, and their own goals. We strive to respect where a member is developmentally, while still encouraging them to open themself to change and pursue new things that they are interested in.
A concept called “self-determination” is at the heart of our work with our members. Self-determination means that members have great autonomy in picking what topics they focus on based on their interests, their own life experiences, and their current development. With those ideas in mind, our staff works with members to choose an ongoing and changing set of learning goals. Research shows that people with developmental disabilities who are living self-directed lives are happier, better employed and educated, and have a higher overall quality of life.
Our overarching goal is to help members become the best versions of themselves so they may be good citizens with lives of purpose and meaning. We do this by teaching various learning modules addressing goals relevant to both the member’s home life and community. Our small staff-to-member ratio of 1:3 means we can ensure individualized goals are tracked, adapted, and assessed.
The multidisciplinary, highly trained team at 3LPlace is constantly refining and improving our curriculum in real-time, as they implement our programs. Our members require and benefit from a range of therapeutic insights and approaches from our staff. Those are introduced, adjusted, and enhanced on an ongoing basis. This dynamic attitude ensures that individual members are well served and that our work is well tuned to whatever topic is at hand.
